Italian white wine?

Some years ago I was at a wine tasting and one of the hosts recommended me to try a wine because I love champagne. The wine had a slight fizz to it and was in Italy (and it was white). I can not remember the name of wine or grape must and hoped there were some familiar from here to tell me what it was. Any takers?? Wow, I'm impressed with all the help here! There was a pinot grigio (one of my favorites I might add), I try a couple of suggestions because your description, I think one of you has stuck! Thank you very much for all that! It's rare that I have so many answers with content!

It could be Prosecco or Asti Spumante – both are made by a different method of real Champagne bubbles means it has less intensity, also tend to be less tart – Especially Asti is often quite sweet.
